![]() Lag from the controller compounds with the lag on the switch box compounds with the lag on the screen. However, it’s important to remember that the lag is cumulative between all of the devices. The lag on most modern TVs won’t cause a problem with any games, even ones as precise as Mega Man. From the TV itself, from the game console being hooked up through a splitter box or a receiver or even from the slight difference between wired and wireless controllers. Such (can be) the case with the Mega Man games. But on super twitchy games, especially ones designed for CRTs, it can lead to some frustration. On most games this doesn’t make much of a difference. On modern systems and on HD TVs there is a very small amount of lag between a button press and screen action. On the NES and the old CRT TVs the games were designed for the lag between pressing a button on the controller and a reaction onscreen was basically instant. The Mega Man games require a lot of precision, sometimes with precision timing of less than a second. On the dozens of games I’ve tested it on, lag has never been a problem … except with Mega Man Legacy Collection. However, the Window 10 Xbox streaming wasn’t perfect for the game. My guess is if the PS4 pad was the primary controller for the system I was playing the game on, I might have scored the collection half a point higher. How do I know this when I only played the Xbox One version? It’s because I used the PS4 controller on my PC (with homebrew drivers to make the system think it was a 360 pad) and streamed the game from my Xbox One using the Windows 10 Xbox streaming. The PS4 controller is much better for the game. And unlike modern platformers that allow for a little bit of wiggle room to use the controller’s analog stick, that’s a great way to have yourself fall in a bottomless pit in Mega Man. While the digital pad on the XB1 pad is light years better than the one on the 360 pad, both are still awful for Mega Man, mostly due to the placement on the controller. I reviewed the Xbox One version of the Legacy Collection, and let me tell you: the Xbox One controller stinks for playing Mega Man. ![]()
